UK SHORE will create the UK Government’s first office purely dedicated to making maritime greener.
Aberdeen Harbour welcomes the Department for Transport’s announcement launching the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE), which will create the UK Government’s first office purely dedicated to making maritime greener.
Bob Sanguinetti, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Harbour Board, said: “Maritime decarbonisation is an important strand of achieving net zero, with ports playing a key role. This requires investment, innovative thinking and collaboration from the public and private sectors if we are to reap the environmental and economic benefits.
“Aberdeen Harbour is perfectly placed to lead the way in helping reduce emissions from ships alongside. UK SHORE funding and the extension of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC) is a welcome addition to the existing commitments from the UK and Scottish Governments towards this initiative.
“We believe that our CMDC project with Connected Places Catapult (CPC) will be a blueprint for the implementation of shore power which can be replicated in other UK ports. Continued engagement and support from the UK and Scottish governments is critical to achieving this.”
Blueprint shorepower demonstration project
In November 2021, Aberdeen Harbour received more than £400,000 from the UK Government to fund a joint demonstration project aimed at providing shore power within the existing Aberdeen North Harbour.
Our comprehensive study, delivered in partnership with CPC, will act as a blueprint for other UK ports to introduce the sustainable fuel alternative for vessels berthed alongside.
The grant was part of the UK Government’s £20 million CMDC which was introduced to drive innovation for clean maritime and shipping projects.
Extensive research and data showed that 78% of CO2 emissions in Aberdeen’s port comes from vessels berthed alongside the quays. Ultimately, this project could reduce the port’s emissions by up to 50%, as well as reducing noise and air pollution levels.
